Inside The Golf Bag: 2022 Open Winner Cameron Smith

It’s been a breakout year for Cameron Smith.

After becoming the fifth Australian to win The Players Championship in March at TPC Sawgrass, the 29-year-old Queenslander followed this up by claiming his first major championship, the 2022 Open Championship.

In a great display, Smith came from four strokes back on the final day to win by one at the historic Old Course at St Andrews.

But what clubs did Smith use to power himself to this first major title?

Let’s have a look inside the golf bag Cameron Smith.

It’s fair to say Cameron Smith is a fan of Titleist and all his clubs fall under the Titleist golf club category.

He has used different variations of clubs throughout the season, but we’re going the focus on the clubs he used at the 2022 Open Championship.

Driver: Titleist TSR3

We love the new Titleist TSR3 Golf Driver, and it’s quickly become a favourite on our website. This excellent driver is six years in the making. With improved aerodynamics and a new “Speed Ring Fence Face Technology” design, this Titleist driver is designed for maximum ball speed.

It’s got a larger sweet spot on the club face to increase the chances of a good connection.

However, we’d say this club is one for better players who are more consistent off the tee.

The Titleist TSR3 Golf Driver is available with a 9-degree or 10-degree loft option on our website (for the record, Cameron Smith used the 10-degree to win The Open)

Fairwoods: Titleist TSi2 3-wood

Like the TSR3 driver, the Titleist TSi2 fairway wood is manufactured with ball speed in mind.

Cameron Smith used this to great effect on some of St Andrews’ longer holes.

The TSi2 has a deeper, low centre of gravity to create a more consistent loft on your fairway wood shots to help with control when you’re shooting for the green.

Irons: Titleist T100 irons

The Titleist T100 iron sets are players’ clubs and are popular among many players on the professional tour - including Cameron Smith, obviously.

If you’re new to golf, these may not be the best option for you as the design is very much aimed at better players, from professional down to mid-handicap players.

The D18 tungsten construction in the heel and toe of these irons is aimed at putting the centre of gravity in the right place for any swing type and improving the MOI, increasing forgiveness while adding distance.

On the course, Cameron Smith uses the Titleist T100 irons from 5-9.

We sell the complete set of these exceptional clubs from 4-iron to pitching wedge (a set of 7 irons).

Wedges: Titleist SM9 Vokey pitching wedge, Titleist SM9 52 degree wedge, Titleist SM9 56 degree wedge

During the 2022 Open Championship, Cameron Smith used a combination of three wedges from a 46-degree loft to 56-degrees, depending on the scenario.

Over the four days, Smith was seen using:

Titleist Vokey SM9 wedge

The Titleist Vokey SM9 wedge is an excellent option for better players looking to get more control on their short game.

The SM9’s lower centre of gravity helps lower the ball's flight and produce a shot that checks up quickly when it hits the ground, while the face design helps with increased spin control.

Titleist SM9 wedge

Alongside the Vokey SM9 wedge, Cameron Smith carried two loft variations of the SM9.

On the course, Smith used this adaptable club's 52 and 56-degree variations.

We offer a range of loft options with the Titleist SM9 Wedge, between 46 degrees and 62 degrees.

Putter: Scotty Cameron 009M tour prototype putter

This isn’t a common putter choice, and as far as we can tell, Cameron Smith is the only player on the professional tour who chooses the 009M prototype.

We’re big fans of Scotty Cameron putters.

Not only do they look great, they’re among the most technically advanced putters on the market.

Everything from weight distribution to feel and forgiveness has been designed for maximum effect on the course, so you can take those last few strokes off your scorecard.

If you’ve got the money, a Scotty Cameron putter is a great investment for your golf bag.

Balls: Titleist Pro V1x golf balls

Engineered for increased distance and control, it’s no surprise the Titleist Pro V1x golf balls are the choice of Cameron Smith and many other professional golfers.

Titleist really has put golf technology at the heart of the V1x golf balls, with a softer cast Urethane cover system and new dimple design creating a ball that’s as equally easy to hit long distances as it is to control around the green.
