Since turning professional in 2019, Colin Morikawa has gone on to achieve several outstanding performances on the PGA Tour scene – including victories in the 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 Open Championship.
Whilst the young American golfer’s career has accelerated very quickly, he has established himself as one of the game’s finest players.
But what we all want to know is – how does he do it, and what equipment does he use to claim so many victories in such a short space of time?
Let’s take a look in the bag of the PGA Tour professional.
What does Colin Morikawa have in his golf bag?
As a TaylorMade staffer, it comes as no surprise that the California native has a full set of TaylorMade clubs in his TaylorMade golf bag. He even plays with a TaylorMade golf ball!
· Driver
Morikawa decided to join the likes of Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods by putting the new TaylorMade Stealth Plus driver in his bag, which is the brand’s latest carbonwood.
The two-time major champion was drawn to the eye-catching red face of the Stealth Plus and opted for a 9-degree loft and Mitsubishi Diamana D+ 60-TX shaft.
Sometimes, Colin plays with a TaylorMade SIM model too. This effectively increases clubhead speed in the second half of the downswing, allowing for faster ball speeds and longer distances.
· Fairway Woods
The young American carries a 3-wood and 5-wood in his bag.
Though he has stuck with his TaylorMade SIM fairway wood in 14-degrees with a Mitsubishi D+ 80-TX shaft, he has upgraded his 19-degree fairway wood to the Stealth Plus in the same shaft.
The Stealth Plus 5-wood boasts a smaller yet more refined 175cc profile, making it the most workable in the Stealth line-up. It’s perfect for shot-making and delivers exceptional distance.
· Irons
Colin Morikawa has a couple of irons in his golf bag – including the P770 (4-iron), P7MC (5-6) and P730 (7-PW), which he has been using for a number of years.
These TaylorMade irons all have Dynamic Gold X100 shafts and Golf Pride ZGrip Cord grips, and the major champ uses the P770 for his longest iron – providing him with even more forgiveness.
· Wedges
For his short game, you’ll often see Morikawa pulling a TaylorMade MG3 wedge from his golf bag – in either 50 or 56 degrees with a True Temper Dynamic Gold S400 shaft. These deliver spin around the greens and provide extra precision on partial shots.
In addition to the MG3 wedges, Colin also plays a TaylorMade Milled Grind 2 lob wedge or Hi-Toe RAW in 60 degrees. These have tall faces and long grooves that help him to elevate the shot better.
· Putter
On the greens, the American PGA Tour pro trusts the TaylorMade TP Juno putter with a 2-degree loft and Lamkin EBL grip.
Though he did use a mallet putter for a while, he found that a blade putter like the Juno sat nicer at address and offered comfortable alignment – meaning he didn’t have to adjust his body and hands as much.
· Ball
Colin Morikawa’s golf ball of choice is the TaylorMade TP5 and he marks it with a line to ensure he can easily identify it and avoid penalty strokes.
TP5 golf balls are designed with a speed layer that offers the perfect combination of distance, spin and control.
