While they can be used to make similar shots, depending on the scenario, left-handed chippers are miles apart from the left-handed wedges you may be used to using for chipping onto the green. Firstly, they’re shaped entirely differently, appearing closer to a mallet putter than a wedge, to offer smoother, more effective contact with the ground and the ball. They’re also weighted differently, to help keep the club in line and close to the deck as it approaches the ball, for the cleanest and most power-appropriate strike possible. Technically you could, but it’s not recommended. It may appear similar to some of the putters you’ve used, but it’s nowhere near as effective for putting. The loft of the club is designed to lift it off the ground, which you’ll want to avoid when you’re on the green as your intention should be to gently roll the ball into the hole. However, left-handed chippers are infinitely useful around the edges of the green, when you need to propel the ball as close to the hole as possible.

‘Need’ is a strong word. Whether you feel you need a left-handed golf chipper or not is entirely dependent on your approach to chipping as a lefty. A golf chipper can help elevate your chipping game, offering more accuracy and control of the ball than you may experience with your wedges. Having said that, if you’re an experienced golfer and you’re used to chipping with your wedges by now, you may already be seeing the results you want. But, if you want to try something new and see if there’s any difference, picking up a left-handed chipper is always on the cards!

Yes, it may be one of the lesser-known clubs, but you’re absolutely allowed to have a left-handed golf chipper (or a right-handed one if you’re a righty) in your bag. Depending on where you play, how you play and the rules you assign yourself to, as long as you don’t go over the maximum number of clubs allowed in your bag, you’re free to carry whatever clubs you wish, including a chipper!
